"Karl May" Legends

Dear friend,
After the last dioramica, I decided on a topic for my new project, which unfortunately, here in Germany,
for a variety of reasons, is very controversial.
At the time when I was dealing with the topic "Karl May" it was not yet to be thought of.
But that's the way it is!
Karl May's books and films have accompanied me - and not only me - but whole generations since my earliest youth.
This gave rise to the idea of depicting the various characters in the Winnetou stories in the way I imagined them when I read the books.

I think the whole discussion about this topic is awful! Yes, the native Americans were depicted in an unathentical way, but the books and the movies created interset and sympathy for their culture.
Your project looks very promising and I will follow with interest!

I haven't never heard before about Karl May, Egbert. I think he isn't so popular here in Spain as can be in Germany, being himself German.

Despite the topic discussed, it is always a pleasure to follow a project which involves figure conversions, especially if you are the one who makes them, my friend.

Karl Friedrich May, February 1842 – 30 March 1912) was a German author.
He is best known for his 19th century novels of fictitious travels and adventures,
set in the American Old West with Winnetou and Old Shatterhand as main protagonists
and in the Orient and Middle East with fictional characters Kara Ben Nemsi and Hadschi Halef Omar.

I have also tried my hand at modeling figures. your modeling clay looks finer than mine. I use Magic sculp.
I'm not entirely happy with it, it smears a bit, you can't tell when it's mixed (causing hard problems) and it's rough at the end. Can you give me a few tips. Also how to attach masses of wire, e.g. for arms or legs.

Hello Jurgen,
I also used Magic Sculp, but only for the 1st layer to fill in or if I want to work on individual areas.
Otherwise I take a mixture of Green Stuff and Magic Sculp, 1/2-1/2.
The material remains more elastic and details can certainly be worked out better.
I drill the brass wire constructions into the fuselage and fasten the whole thing with superglue and white glue.

Thank you for the hints. I gotta get some green stuff. I'm curious how Karl May will continue. I think I've read all the volumes. I remember about 113. When I finish my sculps and post them, I ask for criticism so I can do better next time.

In the meantime I've been busy with the construction of the figures.
In most cases, however, headgear and weapons are still missing.
I took new pictures of the most meaningful actors from the books.
Maybe you can already recognize one or the other character.

Very nice sculpting. I can't assign some of the characters yet, but that's coming. My conversions in the African diorama, on the other hand, look rather modest.

Here are some of the main characters from the Winnetou trilogy

Winnetou, this character is a fictional chief of the Mescalero Apaches.
He is the blood brother of Old Shatterhands.










Old Shatterhand is a famous German-born Westman,
Winnetou's friend "Sharlie" and his blood brother








Intschu-tschuna, Winnetou's father and chief of the Apaches









Klekih-petra the white father of the Apaches
Intschu-tschuna's advisor and Winnetou's teacher









Below are some of the many characters that appear in Karl May's work
with a more or less strange, even comical appearance - both in terms of physique and clothing
(But these figures are characterized as excellent, tricky westmen and good-hearted people).


Sam Hawkens is a well-known Westman and is usually in the company of Dick Stone and Will Parker;
this trio is also known as The Leaf of Trefoil.
He's the one who takes young Charley under his wing and teaches him the beginnings of Westmancraft. However, he is soon trumped by his student.
He has a gun named Liddy and a mule named Mary.

Old Firehand, he's called that because he's one of the best marksmen in the west,
he's a friend of Winnetou and of Old Shatterhand

Tangua, chief of the Kiowas, one of the most implacable enemies of Old Shatterhand
