New to Wargaming....Again.

Hi Guys...and possibly girls :-D

I have returned to wargaming after a break of 35 years.

I would like to pick your barins as the choices, as you are aware, now are enormous.

I have decide to focus on a few periods and these are

English Civil War
Ancients
WW II

First question(s) are, which rules are recommended for each please ??

For ECW I have heard about Pike & Shotte
For Ancients, I have purchased an older copy of Warhammer Ancients, but have read about DBA and DBM and also Fields of Glory.
For WWII I have a copy of Rules of Engagement, which I am quite happy with and seems to be a popular choice.

For figures, I have been doing a lot of web browsing for each period.

I prefer 25-28mm white metal, but this comes at a cost obviously. Hard Plastic seems ok at this scale and relatively cheap per unit. Bought a plastic pack of Parliamentarians from Warlord, which I have yet to assemble, but that would be fun and the lvl of deatail looks good.

For RoE, I have come up with Bolt Action or Renegade as choices.

I have purchased an 8 fig set from Foundry (Assyrian Heavies) and nearly finished painting them and am highly delighted with them. The pack was £8.00....reasonable. This is for me i thought, so logged on to buy one of there Horde packs (70 figs for £68). Foundry have ramped up the prices over last month :( . 8 fig pack was now £11.00 and Horde set was now £85.00....bugger...lol.

Then thought about dropping to 15mm as i would get more for my money.....

That is where I am at the mo....

Bit of a poser for you guys, but hopefully your knowledge will stear me in the right direction. I dont want to do anything on the cheap...reasonable is cool :))

I have recently joined a Wargames group which i will visit soon and pester them also.

Thank you for your time and patience ,

Regards,

I can't help you with rule sets, but I can say that one of the big benefits of 1/72nd plastics is that they are way (way) cheaper than their 25/28mm equivalents (whether plastic or metal). A box of 40 - 50 1/72nd figures will cost you the same (or less) than a box of 10 plastic 28mm figures.

I agree with Chris, the plastic bods are the best price wise etc...also you can convert them, ok in metal this is possible but plastic is easier. The range can be added to with metal bods, but still, the plastic 1/72nd sets can´t be beaten on price. :-)

Hello,

I agree. Further more: Following Hät / Armorfast there are some good news according fast-assembly-vehicles in 1/72. Especially Italeri, Caesar Miniatures and Pegasus have interessting models. Unfortunately in comparison with 25-mm-metall-figures most of them are looking a little bit small.

But I admit that 28-mm-figures have a great advantage: They are multi-pose.

Best regards

Frank

Ps.: Girls? Here?? In this gentlemen´s club??? - Unbelievable! :-D :-D :-D

There is a set of ECW rules that I am rather fond of and is quite good base for playing.
It is put out by the Canadian Wargame(r)s Group and it is called 'For God,King and Country'
you can easily find them on the web through a google search.

http://www.thortrains.net/milihistriot/downloads.html

At the bottom of this page are 4 sets of wargame rules, for 4 different periods. They seem simple enough for the beginner, not sure how good they are though.
