The Pacific

Posted by The Observer on 15 Jul 2010, 22:59

Hey mates-
i just watched the first episode of the new tv-mini-series "The Pacific" covering the action of a group of U.S.Marines in the fightings from Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima - produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

After "Band of Brothers" and "Rome" this is told to be the most expensive TV-series ever made-and as it is similar produced and directed like "Band of Brothers"-wich means: It is full of stunning action and historical proved background concerning the Pacific Theatre of World War 2 -for me a definetly "must see"!

Now to be seen at german tv (Kabel1) from 15.07.2010 on for ten episodes every thursday at 22.15

Already watched it over here(UK) and I have to say I wasn't that impressed with it :( They hyped the arse out of it,kept saying the next "band of brothers" but to be honest it wasn't a patch on it.It was OK to watch don't get me wrong but don't watch it thinking of band of brothers or you will be disappointed.
I am sure people will disagree with me :-D

I actually liked it very much.
I think that the main point is not to expect it to be similar to band of brothers, to me the pacific is a thatre of war I didn't know much about, and I think the series managed to pass the hell like feeling quite well.
Also liked very much letters from Iwo Jima on the same subject.

Well after watching the first part of "the Pacific" i must say it looks a bit controversal to me also.
It has many good researched action scenes-but until now it lacks a bit of personal identification with the main actors.
In part one the historic background was Guadalcanal-and that was a gruesome fighting over several weeks rushing between the Japanese and the U.S.Marines-i think this cannot be packed into 60 minutes on t.v. ;-)
...but i will be watching on

German TV can sometimes be so ..."strange"

I just watched the 2nd part of "the pacific" with a whole bunch of those jungle fights where the japanese tried to overrun the marines and were shot down with machine guns -and then , just when hundreds of men died in the ferocious mg fire :
commercial break advertisement with a clip for mc donalds veggieburger
otherwise good second part

Re: inappropriate TV ads -
Some years ago, British ITV was showing The Big Red One; the scene where the GIs discover the ovens in a concentration camp was interrupted by a commercial for British Gas...

It´s war-action-entertainment, somewhat like hardcore movies (Plot? What Plot? You mean the few sentences between the "action")? I am disapointet, nothing new to learn about the pacific warfare and the circumstances, even the protagonists are schematic as known in every B-Movie puttet out by Hollywood. But good entertainment and, as far as i can say a word about it, fairly good "reenactet" (those machine guns!).

Third Episode. Oh, what boring. Kitsch, as we say in german, sometimes real sentimental trash (like most of Tom Hank´s movies). Sex is actet in exact the same way as the war action: as little boys imagine it.
