Tideway Keepers? Rugby/Football, etc

No sense in swamping Cole's No Fun League thread with sports history and a search for mascots.

Fenton wrote:American football I think originally came from Rugby League..the idea of seperate plays afater each tackle unlike rugby Union where the paly is ongoing, the only difference being the forward pass..In rugby league each side has 6 attempts to score a try then if unsuccesful the ball is turned over to the opposition though usuallyon the last attempt the ball is kicked away downfield, though no specialist teams come on to achieve this

Wasnt the reason that so many people were dying in American Football due the the 'Flying wedge' tactic rather than the hitting though?

There is certainly more similarity between League Rugby and American Football than there is with Union Rugby, but American Football was played long before the split between League and Union. The first official College Football Game in America was played in 1869.

This just points to what a fine idea downs are. Also, the Line of Scrimmage is more than just stopping after a tackle...it's what makes A. Football the "Collision" sport that it is, and creates, at least 9, more positions than there are in League Rugby.

All these games developed around the same time...and of course have their origins in whatever was being played in England before Rugby, Football, etc began to seperate...I know from talking to Grumpy that Australian Football began to develop around the same time that American football did.

Personally, I am fascinated by this stuff. And the football history books are starting to compete for space with the British Empire history books on my shelves.

Yes the flying V or Wedge kept the medics very busy, but it was just the most obvious death trap on the field. Of course they weren't wearing anything back then but canvas jackets. My Daddy played in the 50's and he didn't wear a face-mask. The helmets and shoulder pads have kept pace with the speed and force of the game, but only just...this years been particularly bad. Almost every week somebody was carted off the field strapped to a board...everybody waiting at night to hear the report from the hospital.

The game could be played in a jersey and shorts...that's how we played it as kids in the back yard. It would just have to be slower. I don't know why it hasn't been tried that way in other countries...of course if the game was played with the same ferocity that rugby is played with...nobody would survive it.

Take a look at that Monty...do you see Alabama, or Crimson Tide, or Elephants anywhere on that uniform.

It's painful for me to even talk about 'em right now, but the truth of it is...Alabama has the greatest uniform in all of sports and there isn't anything to it but some numbers.

Their nickname comes from a newspaper reference to a muddy red-clay field that they played on against Auburn 100 some odd years ago..their mascot's an elephant, but that's fairly recent and the God Father of ALabama football hated it...said it made it sound like the team was slow. Point is...if you want a nickname or a mascot in the first place...you don't have to go tacky and plaster it all over your uniforms...like they do in the NFL.

My beloved and bedraggled Wanderers don't do it...they just 'ho themselves out to Reebock.

And Keepers is only a suggestion...certainly the big creative minds on the forum here can come up with something better for Monty and his bruising buddies.

Australian Rules was developed to give something for Cricketers to do during the winter months to keep fit ...For years it was only really played in victoria and South Australia, with Rugby League being dominent in New South Wales and Queensland, though the Aussie Rules is now a nationide league being the AFL ( Australian Football League)

Rugby players to wear some soft padding on their shoulders to help with impact though a recent study in the UK showed that 25% of all proffesional Rugby Union players were out with an injury of some sort during the season

I have a Welsh friend that played both Rugby and American football...he said you were far more likely to get injured playing Rugby, but more likely to have a life altering injury playing A. Football... .

Soccer, or football if you like, is pushed very hard over here, but I think Rugby would be a much easier sell. It's got the violence and especially the sweet, delicious, monster hits that we all love so much. Plus, A. Football has an offensive system called The Option...it's got a thousand variables, the Wish-bone, the Spread, the Vere, etc, but all of them involve pitches...and we've got these little backs that are like greased lightening...like at Florida or Oregon State...they would be deadly in Rugby. We have clubs in every town but no professional league.

We're never gonna do anything in soccer...don't get me wrong I like the game, but it's a joke over here. I was actually good friends with a kid who's brother was so good at soccer that he played in the Premiere League in England, but 9 out of 10 people couldn't tell you who he was or what he did around here. Generally speaking people just don't dig it.

Yeah.. Injuries aren't fun. I missed the second half of one game with a strained hamstring. And a whole game with a shoulder injury.

Well I did play American Football in Ireland for a number of years as well as helping to coach a junior team to two successive championships

Ah but what of injuries I hear you cry...Well after one hit on my leg I got my Fibia broken in 3 places, dislocated my ankle and got all my ligamentts disconnected..so 6 months in plaster, and another 6 on a walking stick sort of put me off :-D

They showed the Aussie Rugby League on Spike Tv in the states and got 2% of the total viewing audience which is pretty healthy

You've gotta tell us more about this.

I can't compete with that... I just had a little surgery and got to lay around for a few weeks.

Australian Rules Football used to be a staple on ESPN. Now it's all Soccer..there's a Premier League match on this morning.

I did see a little bit of Australia v. England a few weeks ago...it was Sunday morning on some off-brand channel (probably the same one that plays Bolton every week). England had what we'd call a fumble...then Australia scored a touchdown with a beautiful set of pitches. I don't know the proper terms, but it was something to see.

Got to see more of the England/Australia replay tonight.

I noticed that while the forward pass is not legal...there's nothing in the rules again' a forward pooch kick. Very nice over the shoulder catch too.

I guess England lost, but they must have really controlled the second half...the time of possession sounded very lopsided.

I also noticed that they were stopping at tackles...the downed runner would hop up and roll the ball behind him with his foot or hike it...and then they'd carry on.

I am almost to the point of hunting up rugby matches on the TV.

Sounds like you were watching Rugby League rather than Rugby Union which is a constant flowing game with no stoppage after a tackle

I wondered about that...based on our conversations here.

Is League or Union played more internationally? I mean it was a very quick turn from being tacked to going again, but there was a definite break.

Union is way more international than League. League is taken seriously only in New South Wales and Queensland in Australia, the North of England and South Auckland in New Zealand. The French used to be good, but that was a very long time ago (think WW2 and just after).

Union is reasonable sized (not as big as football/soccer but a decent enough following) in England, Wales, Ireland (and to a lesser extent in Scotland and bits of Italy), France, South Africa, New South Wales, Queensland (and bits of Western Australia) in Australia, Argentina, and of course New Zealand.

Dont forget Japan and Rumania as well Chris

and Iwould say that Union is taken seriously in Scotland, they are just not very good at the moment

Rugby League is in the off season in both the UK and Australia at the moment, so watching Union is your best bet at the moment
