III/28 Carolingian Frankish 639 AD-888 AD:

Posted by MABO on 18 Apr 2023, 21:34

I started a new DBA army after I have watch too much Vikings. I took the old an very special Strelets Sets

Set 004 Vikings Against Franks
http://plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=321

and

Set 008 Carolingian Cavalry
http://plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=323

out of the shelf, some of them I have painted years before. But since I can use a little more clues today, I supered them a little and painted the others that had not been ready yet.

So first of all the Cavalry

Also the story of Crazy Horse. :eh:

Then the Caballarii Knights

Archers and Psiloi

For the hordes I used the generic Robin Hood figures, that fit for me in the dark ages.

And here the whole army so far.

It is complete to play with it, but it does not include all options. But it is difficult to find the missing figures. I need four Spears with 4 figures each. I think I will take some of the figures from the Strelets Leavy

I think they look more like poor dark age Carolingians than the Anglo-Saxons for example.

Franks are also a range that could be expanded someday maybe...

Hope you like them! :-D

very nice amy ! that is the problem with our hobby : if you leave the main timeframes very well covered (imperial roman, napoleonics, WW2...), it is some times difficult to recreate an entire army.
But,yes, in order to fill the gaps you can use generic medieval sets from strelets...if you find them, they seems to be now very rare... When i see sometimes the prices of some sprues on the Bay, i think i will end rich... one day ! :D

Good looking army you made Mabo. I really like how each figure is treated as an individual giving much color to the entire unit. Very nicely painted and based.

Great work, my friend. I am sorry that work keeps me too busy lately and cannot paint quickly their deserved enemies. Yet, your work push and inspire me

Jan, you have achieved an amazing result on those old Strelets figures usually not very pleasing to the eye when unpainted.

Great work, my friend.

Nice work! I'm always interested to see how other folks approach building DBA armies in 1/72!

A good looking army and using these old - but really quite nice - Strelets figures is an inspiration. Fine work!

I have the Vikings v Franks set, and most of these are tagged for use in future Fantasy/Lord of the Rings armies. Always good also to see those Airfix Robin Hood figures used here...a very useful set.

Thanks again folks.

Btw. I have not yet metioned the Breton Knights I have used as well to fill the ranks of the cavalry. Some of them had helmets that might fit for the Frank Knights. And as I have already metioned, the two early Strelets sets are not enough even for a small DBA army.

Lovely army, the overall composition ties together very well. Here's hoping more plastic franks are made in the future!
