Here in Belgium they called it a "wet" dream of every archeologist

But think about it, the finder had spent about 2500+ uk sterling on his detectors in 8 years of doing his hobby. That´s about 300+ pounds a year and he stands to make upwards of 1.000.000 pounds on the find!!!! That´s a profit of over 124000 a year!!!!!!!!!! And he get in the history books as finder of the biggest recorded find of Anglo-saxon treasure (ie: gold items) ever

The best bit for me is that he is a law abiding metal detectorist who did it all by the book

Laws in Germany could easily make him sad, for he'd get like around 10% of the found treasure.
In other cases, people even got suited for "not" having informed authorities about such a find. And that just because of the authorities NOT having REACTED, when they in fact DID inform them 8 years earlier..

Still, I'm impressed by what's possible..!

The best things I ever found were a heap of mainly rusty WWII german kit that someone had buried. A helmet, gasmask case, ammo pouches, and a rifle Bayonet. The helmet I swopped for 150 LP´s, the bayonet I kept but the rest just fell to bits.

Hi,
Today there was an article in our newspaper about metal detectors.
In the Netherlands it is allowed to look for findings only with the permission of the owner of the land.
In some area's it is forbidden. For findings of stuff of 50 years or older there is an obligation of reporting it to a gouvernment bureau.
Metal detectors are for sale from € 250,- till € 4000,-
