Why don't we use our real names?

Posted by Francesco Giova on 15 Sep 2009, 09:22

This is a topic which comes out sooner or later in every forum; I don't know if it has been discussed here earlier.
I did notice some confusion here and there, when people is addressed sometimes by his nick and sometimes by his real name, that most of the time just a few people know. In the chatroom, you do not know the name of some of the people whom you are chatting with.
Wouldn't it be nice if we changed our nicks to our first name only, just like Benno and a few others do? We could also add the family name or the first letter. Or we could add the old nick between parentheses...what's your opinion ?

I've put my hometown and country in my profile and I've told my first name in the Who am I-thread (and there are also pics on me in various topics and there's a link to my band's page where it doesn't take to much intelligence to figure out who I am with my real name and a lot of pics), but I'll stick to Susofrick. That's a name that is unique to me (well there is another Susofrick on the net and he's also got the right to use the name), my real name is not that unique in Sweden and could really be anybody. Susofrick says that it is me (or my friend, but he's not interested in da small guys) and just me. Country and hometown is important especially if you live in the same country and can meet in person and if you do it's the real name you use. I think it is up to each member to chose. And I think it will be chaos if all of us start changing names now, noone will know who's who. Just my thoughts up in cold Sweden among da polar-bears.

hi mates,
i agree with Suso. My name is very common too. As Andreas i could be anyone. At the forum i m Old Wolf and for the chatters its no secret that Wolf is my family name. But Francesco is right too. In the Chatroom i like to call the members by real name cause its more intensiv there and i feel like having a friendship with some people i never met untill now( or never will meet in my life)

Old Wolf (whos name is Andreas :-D )

Here I have no problems with it, but elswhere I go by the name Mighty Maussie, mostly in forums where I suspect flame wars and nastyness could happen easily and ones privacy is better kept more protected.

It's just not a great idea to go blabbing your name all over the internet, along with other info. But, like Maurice, I have no problem with it here. ;-)

well I´ve been going under a pseudonym since my birth, it´s worked up till now and I´ve got no problems using it here :-) If anyone looks at the last kampen meeting you´ll see that my avatar also bears an amazing resemblence to myself
I use other names for other forums though, my best one was "Hugh Jarse".
If it´s said quickly the hidden meaning becomes apparent. ;-)
(also my real name is can´t be pronounced in earth tongue = *::°^´~'##)

.....but would it make a mess of everything else? I meant it as a retorical question, cos if someone who is using a Nickname then decides to change it to their real one, what could happen ?

I don't think anything serious would happen, but, since no one seems to be liking the idea, it is going to remain a rethorical question :?

I did this once Paul, but I always signed with my usual name, So there was no confusion. Remember "Caveman".
