Going underground

Posted by Susofrick on 25 Aug 2009, 09:44

Last Sunday we visited the coppermine in Falun ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falun ). I've been to the silvermine in Sala ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sala_Silvermine ) before, it's closer to my hometown, but this was my first visit to the coppermine in Falun.

For some reason they had a battering ram (or could it be a swing for children? Nah!):

They have worked the mine since around 700 AD to 1992.

Here is the hole (there was a cave-in 1687, but it was on a Sunday and noone was close):

Here we are going down:

And here's one barrel they used to go up and down the shaft. One barrel could take 8 men (they stood with one foot on the barrel and one hand on the rope). To get off they had to swing the barrel and jump at the right moment.

Here is a doll resembling Fet-Mats Israelsson ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fet-Mats_Israelsson ):

A model showing the work in the mine:

They even had some Zvezda on show at the museum (representing our great history):

The worlds biggest coin. No wallet for this one. It was wagon. Weight: 19,7 kg!:

And here's the lake were we ate lunch on the way home:

All in all, it was a great day. But if you want to visit a mine the silvermine in Sala is a better choice. If you want a great museum visit the coppermine in Falun. Sala have spent money developing underground and Falun have spent their money above.

Dear Susofrick,

thanks for this entertaining travelogue !
But I guess the battering ram is in fact a dugout canoe on a drydock.
Pretty sure on that.

Once you come to Germany, you might want to visit the coal mining museum in Bochum and a couple of spots in the Ruhr valley. We haven't been mining since 700AD, but I'm sure the last 100 years have made up for that.

I need to go on holidays, too.. :?

Gruß,
Marc.

To far and to cold Cole ;-)

Seem to me it was very interesting Sus. If it was near to us, I certainly should visit it too.

Thanks for sharing your pictures with us

Greetings Peter

Hi Sus,
I remembered visiting the mine in Falun. It was in 1994.
This year we visited the coppermine in Outokumpu, Finland.
