Painting tin figures

Posted by naord on 05 Feb 2019, 18:56

Hello

I recently received my first Valdemar miniature figures, made out of tin.
I only painted plastic figures before, using acrylic colours (I have Vallejo, Humbrol & Testors brands).

Is it possible to paint tin figures in acrylic too, or it must be oil? My primer is oil colour.

Thank you,
Naor

If properly soaked and primed, the acrylics should work just fine! But show us your results with pictures, please.

Absolutely no problems, like Bluefalchion said. Those figs are made of metal and painted just with acrylic paints.

A warm welcome to Israel. I have visited your country in 1989 - long ago, but it was really fascinating (out of topic... :-D )

No it will not get rusted unless you leave it outside in the rain all winter.

I soak the figures to remove the grease from the mould-making process. So I get a glass jar with a lid. Fill it with hot water with a few drops of regular dish-washing soap (detergent) and a few drops of bleach. Put on the lid and shake it vigorously.

Then, take the lid back off and insert the figures. Leave them to soak for a few days (or two weeks if you have the time).

Then take them out, rinse them with filtered or distilled water, and set the figures on a paper towel to air dry.

After they are all the way dry, prime them. When the primer dries, they will be ready to paint. Hooray!

Wow, Aaron, what a professional preparation. To be honest: I did not do that, I just prime the figures. I never had any problems. But it is interesting to read. Which brand of metal figs you have painted?

@naord: We'll see when there's another chance. :-D

How one paints their figures is up to them, but this is my tip for today.
I use cheap white vinegar in a sealed glass jar to clean my metal figures.
The acidity does a wonderful job.
If it cleans gold rings,it will most certainly clean metal toy figures.

 Yes BB, gets in a right pickle as he Pickles them overnight. :coffee: i certainly do.

I also just prime my metals. I've never had a flaking problem so,far.

I must comment that whenever I've seen small lead castings done I've never seen a release agent used.
It's pour, separate the mould, knock out the casting, fasten together the mould, pour ad infinitum
