Historical Movies

Posted by Peter on 20 Mar 2009, 22:01

I recently I bought a DVD with the old version of "300", called "The 300 Spartans". It's a movie from 1961 (on the DVD-box) not so impressive as the new version, but certainly not bad. I found the trailer and here it is:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_GhavWeCB7o&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_GhavWeCB7o&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

If someone else has interesting historical movies that he can recomment, let us know. And put the trailer in this topic. Thanks in advance!

Greetings Peter

Hi Peter,
Mine is in my signature below:
Master and Commander, Patrick O'Brian
Not officially historical but it matched reality of that era.

Master and Commander is a great movie. My favorite next to the Lord of the Rings. 8)

Hi Peter,

I also have that movie on dvd, The 300 Spartans :-D and I think it's great. A little dated but it tells the story and it is a great resource for painting figures, as far as uniforms are concerned and such.

Gettysburg (1993) about the battle at, is one of my all time favorites:

<object width="480" height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/arGg3Twqmi8&hl=nl&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/arGg3Twqmi8&hl=nl&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></embed></object>

Another one is All Quiet On The Western Front (WWI, based on the diary of a German soldier), but be sure to see the original one from 1930, much better than the remake from 1979:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KglZYcDZbNE&hl=nl&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KglZYcDZbNE&hl=nl&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I love samurai movies!
I did a lot of medieval knights, but my true love are the samurais.
Unfortunately, there are not so many figures on this subject in 1:72.

My favourite historical films are:

"Die Brücke" (the bridge). A German film of the 50s about a group of boys defending a bridge in the last days of WW2.

"Saving Private Ryan" It shows the horrors of WW2 in a very realistic way.

"Kingdom of Heaven" for it´s very authentic knights and equipment.

"Gladiator", "Last Samurai" and "The Patriot".....and many more...

I know many of these films have historical mistakes and so on but it is OK, if the film is good in entertaining me.

An old favourite of mine that nobody has mentioned so far would be

"Das Boot" or "The Boat" in English. About the trials and tribulations of a UBoat Crew in the early 1940's.

Plus the classics Battle of Britain and Battle of Midway

There is also a movie I have seen that is a German production. Not sure what it was called but was about Stalingrad from the Germans perspective. Brilliant.

Not to mention Enemy at the Gates, especially the opening scenes

It was called exactly that "Stalingrad", great movie indeed, much better then "Cross of Iron" which is about the same theme (though also a great movie).

But then "Lost Battalion" should also be in the list, about a WWI US inf bat that gets cut off after a failed offensive.

War and Peace, directed by Sergey Bondarchuk (though French uniforms are incorrect for 1805 and even for 1812, but I don't care too much in this case  ).

Otherwise not really a fan of historical movies.

Here´s one for the historically incorrect box, the remake of the Bridge, where a group of german youth defend a bridge somewhere in germany at the end of the IIWW. The best bit(among others ) is of them fighting off a (I think, not to up on tanks really) T72 and a sergeant with a digital watch.!!!!!

You are right. For the original 50s film they used tanks made of wood and pulled them with ropes or they had a lorry inside. But this looked quite cool and realistic. The original bridge they produced the movie is in Cham. A town nearby in my area.

That modern tank they used in the new film was really rubbish......as well as the appearance of the US-Army. Can´t help, but something is wrong with their uniforms.

The original is excellent. Should be obligatory watching in schools. I think the problem with the US troops is that they all look like the same guy, are all to clean and all carry thompsons (and a digital watch)
compare;
End fight scene, The bridge 1 black and white 1959, battle during the day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSiV4JEe ... re=related
end fight scene The bridge 2, Colour, battle at night. How long does that boy fire his MG without burning out the barrel??????
