Uniforms and weapons Pontifical Guard 1527

Posted by myname96 on 19 Nov 2013, 21:32

I'm planning a battle based on the famous "last stand" of the Papal guard in 1527. I'm looking for information on the uniforms and weapons Pontifical Guard (Papal Swiss Guard) during this battle. Can anybody help me with this? :-D

Many thanks,

Brian

You have this set...In 1/72...http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=2232
The uniforms haven-t changed in centuries, except today they wear bereta hat instead of helmet, but in the parade they wear helmet...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Guard
As I rememeber uniforme is the same from the it-s creation, there is 100 to 150 men, all swiss, in size from 160 and something up to 180 I think...Rumors has it that Michelangelo has made those uniformes, but other artist mad it...
Now you have this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8nwZs_gN9M and this http://www.mandatory.com/2013/07/02/the ... -history/2

I am sorry to say that the Swiss guard in 1527 at the Sacco di Roma had not the uniforms which are known to us.

cheers

Thank you Emperor

for the Great information! :-) The figures I planed on using (with some conversions) were
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1600 , as far as I can tell the Swiss guard have been trained in the use of fire arms for centuries. I know the Arquebus was a common weapon of the time, but I don't know for sure if they used them in 1527. I'm hoping Some one might be able to provide some information on this point. :?

If the used them, this set would also allows me to make (with some slight converting) some Swiss Guard Arquebusers. :-)

For those acquainted with the italian language, this is the official Vatican version of the story.

http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/swiss ... isa_it.htm

However, they confirm that:
-in 1527 non prescribed uniform was worn;
-the attribution of the design of the uniform to Raffaello (not Michelangelo) is based on an erroneous interpretation of the painting "La Messa di Bolsena" with depicts some sword-armed "sediari" erroneously identified with Swiss Guards;
-the present uniform was designed at the beginning of the XXth century in a "Renaissance-like" fashion.

My five cents
Fabrizio

Hi Fabrizio,

Thank you for the information :) I also noticed that the article says that there armaments were the halberd and sword, It does not mention the Arquebus. So I we can assume they did not use them at that time. This is disappointing, it would have been fun to have armed the Swiss with them in the upcoming Battle....

Myname96,long ago I was worried about painting model soldiers as a hobbie. mainly due to the fact that in those days there were not many models avalible,so what you got in the way of chioce ,is what you painted ,but I still realised the uniforms and muskets were a bit wrong for the battle I wished them to be in.Then a dear friend said "Stop worrying and just paint them up!"You have the figures,and you have the picture within your minds eye what you wish to do. So my advice is just paint them all up,and post them on the Forum!
