Basically, it´s in the 11th century, a Christian Boy from England, travels across europe to learn about medical practices from the muslims. In one part (hopefully they put it in the film) he works as a Military surgeon in india and helps to heal war elephants. Its a huge book, brilliant Story that covers a span of time, with believable characters and as far as I know, has very few historical innacuracies (probably the film makers will Change that)
Here it is called Der Medicus and is one of the all time Bestsellers in Germany...if you can get a copy...read it. You don´t have to be interested in the period , the Story is great anyway.
