The most obvious answer is the correct one...or to illustrate, the same way my three month old son, Little Steve Spurrier does.

With the little food they ate, the won't need to poo in the middle of the day or middle of the battle. Peeing, just open your trousers and pee where you are standing, no time for niceties.

Quite true. Modern field rations also tend to 'bind' the system so you don't need to go that often......

Funny though, the first time I saw the Airfix Napoleonic RHA set, I thought the gunner loading the shot was taking a pee!

I am not a medical man but isn't it a fact that stress reduces the necessity to alleviate oneself? Or just the other way round, if you cannot control yourself.

Interesting question indeed, rarely discussed in the history books.

Je_ touche is right, the stress factor gets everyone in one of two ways, either you can´t hold your waters or don´t take any notice of the need to go. As for the big brown, you just can´t go unless under absolute shock, the old phrase ´crapping yourself´ or there is a lull and the other matters apart from staying alive/in one piece come to the fore. Fear tends to suppress most everything, eating etc. I knew one bloke who says he didn´t pee for 3 days although he drank due to the fear/stress. Also you tend to sweat an enormous amount.

No, you are false. It is the first figure on second row. He has already finished his "business" and now pulls his foot out of it. ....

I disagree, you are all mistaken. It's the last figure, sixth row, he is holding his nose while relieving himself.

Hi guys,

I know I am getting back to being serious so sorry for that but it also occurred to me that there was a practical use for those who needed to pee whilst on the battlefield in the time of black powder.

When the barrels of the muskets/rifles began to overheat, thus raising the likelihood of an accident for the shooter. They would urinate (if they were able) down the barrel of their weapon to cool it. Something I believe modern soldiers are still know to do.

You can read about it in Remarque's 'Nothing New on the Western Front' too. I think soldiers of all armies did it.

In the film we were soldiers, with Mel Gibson, they all pee on the Mortar at one point to cool it down,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Were_Soldiers
and the scene its-self
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OEnVHQ-1DI
And in Gladiator someone in front of Maximus pees himself with fright before he gets sent into the arena
