Winttrix - it's a shame we were not board buddies back in November as I live 15 minutes from the proving ground. This place is one of my all time favorites and has such a sentimental meaning for me. If I can figure a way to do it and find them, I will post some pictures from when I was a kid (in the 70's) and allowed all over the tanks with the escort of an MP. I have been there a few times in my adult life and I must say that time has not been kind the vehicles. As you may have noticed and as evident in some of your photos there are many tanks that are no longer there. Shipped off to other facilities. About 10 years ago they had a fund raiser to collect money to hopefully build some sort of enclosurer to protect the vehicles, but that never panned out.

Thanks for sharing your pics as it brings back fond memories.

cool trip.

made me think of when I used to live next to sailsbury plane. we had "warning Tank Crossing" signs on the roads and in the woods where we walked. we used to occasionaly drive around an old village they use for target practice and wargames :-D . But to top it all off having jets and helicopters flying over head  , soldiers walking around the woods  and the sounds of tanks and guns 8) really made you scared :affraid: :affraid: that they might forget which village is the target on and which one was the one you lived in

any way nice trip. At first I thought you went to scotland

shouldn't this be in the officeres mess though?

@Bramble: Yes it is a shame, I would have loved to meet you :-D

@Gowan: I would love to be in the middle of military exercises but that's just me 8)

This has some hobby relation as it could be used for reference pictures.

Nice justification of the thread

and I didn't enjoy it because I was so small. I could really like it now. besides when we walked in the woods the army's bivowacks were great places to hide and play in  ;-) It's just that we were in a valley so that you could not really see what was going on you just heard it. But meeting the soldiers in the woods that time my father and I were walking the dogs is a cool memory. the only sad this is those younge cadets would have quite likely been sent to iraq and afganistan a few years after that moment some of them could have died there :(

But I can tell you one thing that you would like but uneaved me. when we went back in 2007. we went to that village and did a walk in the woods. but as we walked in the fields around them a helicopter carring a large cargo in the net beneath (4x4?). flew right over us saw us and circled round to face us  I decided to have some fun and make them think I was part of thier game and ran straight into the woods. this made them circle again. but they noticed my mother casualy walking and realised that nothing was going on that involved them (I think) . They then landed at the other end of the field. and a while later took off and flew over us again. :-D

hoped you like the stories I am telling I have a few more including one about the prison which was also right next to the village just up the hill a bit ;-)
