An absolute Masterclass, Carlo!

I see that you left the holes in the side of the horse - did you actually manage to get the pegs on the rider to fit?

Thanks Carlos this is certainly in the nick of time. Always was trying to paint a horse. With the Florian Geyer coming from Waterloo, I can now follow your tutorial.

Magnificent. Your shading and highlighting approaches the luminous quality of flats painters. Thanks for the tutorial.

EXCELLENT work Brother Carlo!

Horses are very difficult to do when it comes the muscles. I study the photograph of horses when I paint and try to find a balance between photo and artistic creativity. It is not an easy task.

What is your take on the horse's eyes? I often debate with my modeler and forum friends on this topic (Sasha, you wanna take this one? )

You did a great job and thank you very much for sharing with us.

Well - he left them black. I don't know if he did that for security or just because it's the easiest way. I usually put a very small anthrazit reflex point into the eyes plus a bit white in the corners, when it's a horse under extreme stress. ;-) So in this case, I would consider Carlos' solution being the best possible compromise.

But this horse here looks a bit like the shiny pictures that uniform postcard painters painted of parading cavalrymen back in the beginning of the 19th century. It's too clean and crisp, too much of a 'theoretical' horse. I especially dislike the sheer amount of wrinkles and those flabby folls in the breast area - it gives the model a somewhat unnatural appearance. Especially, because the muscles in the frontleg region are looking like they went completely out of the natural proportions - with the result that this horse model reminds me of a Shar Pei...
Especially because Carlo brings a high rate of contrast into this miniature.

If I could make a quick suggestion, and I do paint the horse brown then wash with black ink, but I find you get a better effect if you try and paint the highlight on just before it drys...I have to admit the sometimes it dosntwork so I have to do it again, but you do gt a nice loking horse especially in those areasa which are quite large like its rump which can be hard o get right at times
