Childhood Memories / 1:32 Airfix Figures

Posted by T. Dürrschmidt on 05 Sep 2009, 15:44

I know, this is a forum for 20mm figs and smaller, but the first figures I had were some 1:32 Airfix bods, like many others of us here, I guess. Here is a website which shows them all.

The british infantry support group!, the medieval foot soldiers! The indians and the cowboys ! I don´t think there´s a set here that I didn´t have (up until 1978)

I had some kits of their collector's series (and have them to this very day, unbuilt!!), but never had any of their soft plastic stuff in 1/32. I had Timpo Toys instead, anyone remember those? :farao:

I still got some of these Airfix oldies. More specific the cowboys and indians, and some figures of the 7th cavalry.

Childhood memories ;-)

Yes, greys against the greens :P My mother still digs them out of the flowerbeds.
The thing that makes me wonder is; there were Millions of "toy soldiers" produced, some got chewed up, some met with terrible fire related "accidents" but a lot got thrown in the bin when childhoods started to come to an end. These bods are made out of unrottable Plastics, so that means that all the local dumps from the 60´s and 70´s (and a bit beyond before recycling) are teeming with them, some of them rare objects. Anyone into a bit of Archeology in the local tip??

A place where they hide is often where the old boxes out of childhood days are, like garages and so on...
but beware you sometimes discover awefull things like letters from long gone girlfriends and believe me it is better to hide them... :-D

I purchased the missing sets via Ebay last year. The British support group was hard to get. I paid about 35 Euros to get a complete set.

I was lucky to own the Italian and British Infantry in childhood days. Nowadays these two sets are very hard to find. I want to paint every set during the next years (but 1 fig per pose only).

I also had the complete series of Matchbox 1:32 figs. They were more chunky in sculpting but they are also very nice. I´ve painted a fig from their 8th-Army set some months ago.

Therefore I´ve put this topic to the "Officers Mess".... ANYTHING NON HOBBY RELATED. So it fits the same way like talking about football and other things.... ;-)

You're right duerrschmidt, I think this is less off topic then football and music. I Like your post. Brings back memories i must say....

Am I the only one who thinks so or is that afrikakorps officer just superb?
