French Hussar - 5th regiment (mounted) - 54mm

Posted by Kekso on 06 Sep 2013, 15:31

Ok, let's open this subforum with something. Not much but....

I'm working on mounted French officer of 5th Hussar regiment from Napoleonic wars. Producer is M Model from Poland, material is resin and scale is 54mm. I used a lot Tamiya putty to fill in the gaps but after hours of gluing, filling and sanding figure looks quite well. I have 8 days to finish it because I want to take it to competition next week. This is what I made so far;

Base. I'm trying here to imitate the snow with sodium bicarbonate but I'm not completely satisfy with the results. Base is entirely scratchbuilt:

I will keep you posted about progress or I'll post photos of finished project.

Nice start, I only made snow once lol but it was 3 years ago and still looking like snow, I used : bicarbonate mixed with white toothpaste, then sprinkle some more bicarbonate, let it dry, then I covered it with a a very thin base of woodglue very diluted in water so this way the mix of bicarbonate and toothpaste doesn't rotte or turn yellow.

It may sound a bit weird the mix, but the bicarbonate works as snow and the toothpaste was for giving a wet looking to it, your's actually look too dusty, like sand, I guess this what you don't like.

Give it a try in a different base lol

Hi Bourbaki,
Thanks for suggestion. I did use this tutorial:
http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2010/05/tutorial-making-snow-advanced-way.html
but I didn't reach matte varnish part yet. After I'm satisfy with bicarbonate appearance I'll spray over it with matte varnish.

Shouldn't the horse's eyes be fully brown?

Thanks Benno... I've found other example but I think I'll do it as you suggested. Brown eyes are more common.

It will be very interesting to see your end result, especially with his head stuck on proper like and not on that spike! Painful comes to mind. This is for certain though he`s go`ing to freeze upon that galloping horse, don`t these guy`s ever put their jackets on? Forgive my tongue in cheek wit,I really do like your achievement so far,and the snowy effect is something that is food for thought, and I might well give this idea a try.Thank`s for the inspiration, and good luck in the coming competition.

Okay, after long, long.... long time some progress:

I decided not to go with snow base so I made grass one. Horse is temporary placed and I need to work some details on it:

Image

I repainted all yellow parts of uniform in metallic (gold). Not sure if it's more correct but it appears better in my opinion. Face is almost done, still got to work on fur hat:

And finally, jacket (pelisse):

I hope I will post some more progress sooner and that project will be finally finished until next year

I can remember this topic very well,as it was one that I first saw on the Forum after I decided to become a member last Year. Nice to see more work completed on it and the Jacket is very Nice Looking!
Upon the subject of snow, recently I was Experimenting with P V A Glue and Bicarbonate Soda,in order to create a white sea effect around a ship at sea. Any way ,it looked and worked out fine ,but also looked like very good snow too,and very cheap. BB
