Attack on LHS Farm at Waterloo

Next off sent me searching for Marshal Ney as I wanted him in on the actions trying to defeat LHS, I found a metal one on ebay and went for it, it was already painted - but I wanted to put my own flair on it so I re painted the figure and constructed a horse using the Perry cavalries.

In contrast to the Perry Rifles I got hold of a box of the 95th Rifles (virtualy the same as 2ndKGL) from the Wargames Atlantic range - there are Excellent figures with some real expressions and poses.

Oh after checking some of my other pics - I had painted the majority of the 5th Line KGL Shako cords in Green I think I made a few in brass to begin with (and foregot to correct them).

Welcome to the forum Waterlooman. Very nice painting you are doing, I especially thank you for the AK flat varnish tip - it is precisely what I have wanted for years. Clothing should be matte and leather and weapons a bit shiny as in reality. This will allow me to do that.
Hougomont was a very large complex with several thousand men fighting over it. Do you have a target for how many figures and what area you will display? My curiosity is helped by my working on a waterloo diorama as well though i am only painting cuirassiers (the 4th). Chris Dodson gives very solid advice and I don't doubt he is correct about the color of shako cords and need to finish the bird nest shoulder epaulettes. Very nice painting work, this should be a very interesting piece when you finish.

Thank you kindly, I am building my dio set around La Haye Sainte Farmouse, it set on a base 90cm - 30cm, I have over 100 figures possibly more to go on the dio - I have already built the farmhouse (will show them picx latter).
I have a tip to show the shiny parts of the rifles - use s pencil and rub it over the metal part of the barrel.

I apologize for replying about Hougomont when your title obviously says La Haye Sainte. I've seen many Hougomont dioramas and videos about it of late so my mind was stuck in a loop. Love your drummer and standard bearer. Drum heads got dirty in the center very quickly with use being animal skins. Just an observation from a drummer. Cheers, Bessiere

Th emain thing I am a bit griped over is the shoulder plumes on my 5th Line KGL I did not do the white stips in the middle as I was a bit new to figure painting a couple of years back, and they have already been super glued down in my farm complex thats been made and painted, and no way I would be able to paint them now - lesson learned I guess.

More fine figures! I like the drummer very much.

Two observations though:

- The flag attached to the Eagle pole looks too big; the real thing was only about half this size
- Given that this is a diorama depicting a key part of the action at Waterloo, some way into a muddy, bloody, smoke-laden day, I'd say that your figures still look too 'clean'. You might consider making them a bit grubbier?

The painting standard here is tremendous althoughI personally like my troops to be filthy to reflect the realities of campaigning.

Your tirailleurs are fantastic but I believe the 1st and 3rd were at Plancenoit not La Haye Sainte which is a pity.

If your standard of troop painting is reflected in your farmhouse, this should be very special indeed.

Thank you kindly, think I got caught in a bit of confusion as I read Skirmishers as tirailleurs that attacked LHS, but no worries I have plenty of other French figures I can make as 54th/55th - compagnies de fusiliers, compagnie de grenadiers, and compagnie de voltigeurs, I already have some made up and painted.
I will also dirty them up with dirt and dust.

I agree that the flags issued to French line infantry for the Hundred Days campaign were larger (and simpler) than earlier flags: Information is a bit sketchy but it would appear that the 1815 pattern flag was 120cm square. https://www.warflag.com/napflags/flaghtml/franindx.htm

I still wonder whether Perry have rather 'enhanced' the size of their flag?

Interestingly, I know of one French maker of replica military flags who are offering a reproduction of the 45th Line flag pattern 1815 which is only 60cm square.

Hi, just looked at my standard on my figure and its about right - perhaps a tad larger - it looks to be about 50 scale inches square not 48 inches - so guess it should be ok.
