Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliffe - I wonder how close it is to the original novel?

I was a bit confused at first I thought it was referring to the Teutoberger Wald but that was 111 years earlier than the opening said, and then it got even weirder. good action scenes though I will most likely go see it

Rather ancient world scots looking like barbarian tribesmen than indians in my opinion ;-)

I read the summary of what happens in Rosemary Sutcliffs Novel and i think the director seems to be close to it.
But i must say that many movies concerning ancient britannia are really not good -f.e. "King Arthur" with Clive Owen is in my opinion way too "clean" and full of historical errors

That novel what you're talking about is written for the youth, so the index of our library tells. But looking at the trailer, you wouldn't expect that.

Picts then for sure, as Scots didn't live in Caledonia during Roman times ;-)

But they still look like Indians to me

From the beginning of the clip this is clearly based on The Eagle of the 9th and looks as if it follows the first part of the book pretty closely. Eagle of the 9th is a children's book - though I read it recently and enjoyed it - it is only the love interest bits that make it a children's book - the military bits are quite good. Looks as if the second part of the film (when he goes looking for the eagle) departs from the book.

For anyone who doesn't know the legend - the 9th Legion disappears from the Roman battle order at this time which led to speculation that the legion was destroyed in Britain. However, the truth is probably a lot more prosaic and it was probably just disbanded (though it isn't clear why).

The Roman legionaries look good in the film (not so sure about those chariots!). But the Picts! They look like ancient Libyans rather than Celts. Not impossible I suppose but not supported by any contemporary images I know of. There is a long cinematic tradition of showing anyone from Scotland in strange garb (Braveheart anyone!).

Hopefully it will be good!

I have read the book from rosemarie sutcliff when I was young and I like it very much that is nearly all I can remember, ah, but I think the main character is joined by more than one man
