Hi guys,
I am heading to Japan for a couple of weeks soon. Any recommendations regarding must-visit places for the hobby or the history nut? I'm sure I will find a few myself but all suggestions welcome.

If you go to Japan, visit Royal palace in Kyoto Tokio...
Also visit Kabuki theater it is traditional Japanese theater, where you can see many of Japanese folklore...Like tales about Samurai or other Japanese folklore...
Also visit Japanese gardens and museum, and try Japanese national food like ramen...

What are your favorite period(s) in history of Japan? Where are you going?
As suggested by Emperor, if you want to visit the Imperial palaces in Tôkyô and Kyôto you'll need an application. Here is the site : http://sankan.kunaicho.go.jp/order/index_EN.html
If you do the one in Tôkyô, try to visit on tuesday, wednesday or thursday, because the eastern gardens are closed the mondays and fridays.
If you want to visit castles, do some originals like Himeji, Matsumoto and Hikone.(i don't know if the Tenshu of Himeji is open to the public. It has been restored during several years). A lot of castles were reconstructed in concrete during the 50's to 70's. For more information on castles try these sites:

Thanks for the tips guys. I am back from my trip now. Got to visit some great sites including Inuyama Castle, one of the 12 'original' castles, and of course more temples than you could count.
Also visited a hobby store in Tokyo with seven floors of stuff, didn't have the luggage space though and a lot of it was giant robots!
Along with a Super Typhoon and an earthquake it was quite a trip, I see some samurai painting coming up!
