Zirrian's Work in Progress

Hello everyone!

I usually realize that I'm not very active in my Gallery thread...where I would not post WIP stuff. However, as I think I'm dabbling into a lot of stuff that you might find interesting with very long time to play out fully, I thought it would be a good idea to start this thread.

So, let's start with something - 3D printing. I've been using 3D printers since 2019, but my first machine was still an early type with a lot of drawbacks. However, last year my father purchased a Phrozen 4k Mini that I've been using myself as well to print figures and vehicles. Among 28mm fantasy types, I've been printing a lot of 1:72 historicals. Unfortunately the 3D sculptors are not really active in 1:72, mostly 28mm or 1:100 (15mm). Thankfully the technology makes it easy to up or downscale stuff, although sometimes details become too thin or too thick, so it's not always working. I try to find the models where it works.

And to start off with a pic, I've printed a Winter War Finnish infantryman from "Just Some Miniatures" from Poland. The figure was scaled for 15mm, so it was upscaled to 140%, but for the next I will do 150% to make it fully compatible with the Strelets figures.

Image

He sells the same figures in 28mm too, the difference is that the heads and weapons are somewhat bigger on the smaller scale models which work very nicely. Previously I have printed out his Soviet arty crew in 1:72, they were indeed a bit thin compared to other figures. Because of this they would print neatly in 1:48 or 1:35 too if needed I think.

Upscaled Finn looks better, also did an M1 57mm gun for myself to replace an earlier, not so succesful print, and a ZiS-3 for a pal. Both guns from 3DBreed's March to Hell campaign, printed at 70% from the 28mm version.

Will do that for sure :)

But until then, more WIP, this time an Armourfast StuG III on the Eastern Front sometime 1942-ish. Mostly doing it to try out some new paints (local store had a sale on the AK Dunkelgelb modulation set as AK stopped making it and it was kind of last stock that needs to go), and I'm quite happy with it so far. White base, dark brown-ish color for the recesses, two dunkelgelb tones (base and light base) sprayed, then a highlight plus some brushwork for the rivets and such - on this last point I need to work more carefully in the future, at some parts it appears to be too bright.

Will add some generic decals tomorrow. Not looking to win any awards with this, just another vehicle from the stash into the finished pile...

Needs a slight misting with buff for the running gear and then done.

I'm somewhat satisfied with it, one less vehicle in the stash looking very plastic-y and sad, one more vehicle that I could field if I would play a single game anytime soon.

Sprayed the US M1 cannon with the olive drab modulation set - it's not as pronounced as the Dunkelgelb set, but the colors themselves are pretty nice.

Also, happy birthday to me.

Thanks chaps.

I hope you forgive me for this kind of spamming, but I'm on a bit of a roll - the 57mm gun is ready, only need varnish, and some weathering - will be used for the Bulge along with a printed crew. I was contemplating giving it a whitewash, but as far as I've seen, the guns were not camouflaged, so OD it is.

And the best thing about printing...if I need another for my US airborne, and another for my US army, and yet another for the USMC, I can just print as many as I need in one piece, ready for painting after like 15 minutes once printing is finished.

Well, not much was done today other than building the 1:35 ICM T-34 I got for my birthday, and converting some Italeri DAK figures. As I don't need so many mortars and SMGs, I'm making them into riflemen. First figure above was originally the mortar guy, now he's a casual riflemen.

Please show more of your figure conversions. I am very interested in that. :-D
The figure seems a bit stiff to me. Maybe you can cut the back and insert a wedge. Then use pecial equipment to camouflage the cut. Then the figure bends forward. Great idea nonetheless.
Please understand this is just a suggestion.

Well, the base pose was a bit stiff, but I will chalk it up to Hans being very hot, sweaty, and wishing to go home and have a jug of beer :)

I've this converted chap too, Italeri's SS Officer converted into an SS NCO.

Unpainted:

And an older conversion, Caesar greatcoat submachinegunner into a rifleman, because of course nobody makes enough riflemen in their kit...

From the big pile I acquired today, I have built this German sIG 33 cannon. Definitely not an easy build kit, I shared some unpleasantries with the kit while I was building it - assembly manual is not very good at only 4 steps for the entire kit with unclear pictures of where parts should go, tiny flashy parts, soft-ish plastic...but eventually built up into a nice gun. The FtF arty crew box is on backorder, I expect it in the next 1-2 weeks. I plan to make this a gun for Barbarossa or about that time.

Another First to Fight cannon built, this time the respectable 150mm...angle is oddly low, and it was again a rather fiddly build, but hey, it's done...

And the third and final FtF kit from the bit batch...the mighty Pz 38(t) ausf. B.

I despise the assembly instructions they give in the magazines. But at least it's built. I think four more to go in my stash (a 35(t), R-35, H-35 and an ausf. A of the 38(t) plus some random infantry), so it's not going too badly.

Now to paint them :)

1:72 Tetrarch tank - designed by my dad, printed by me. Option for a 2pdr and a Littlejohn Adapter at the moment, but the CS barrel will be added too. Some stuff is missing (lamps, most notably), but will be added for the full release.
