Just a quickie to see if I am on the right track

Posted by musketier on 15 Jul 2010, 03:54

I started to experiment with paints for my ww2 Japanese infantry. I was just wondering if I got the mix close enough and I await what you all think. Just the uniform is done ( well, ok I did do some equipment and flesh areas for contrast :-D

Looking good. Not really my period, but could it be that the uniform is a bit to dark? :?

I think it's the brightness of the pictures. I did a comparison with the Japanese soldier I've painted here, and the green color is almost the same:

Anyhow, you did a great job on one of the first set of plastic soldiers I ever bought
(long time ago, I'm getting old  )

Yes I still overdo the pics in Picasa
a little backround on it
i washed the figure in soap and water
then I applied HowardHues medium grey as a base ( a water based acrylic, works best for me)
then I used Vallejo 923 Japan uniform wwII ( I know I have read never to use it for this )
then I drybrushed Vallejo 881 yellow green
and that's how it came out I am quite happy with it
Peter could I ask what color you used for the shirt in that figure you linked to?
I will try and see if I can get a better lighting set up for my pics ;-)

And it was one of my first sets I ever bought too ( not this one but I used to have hundreds of the Airfix Japanese infantry until they got lost in a move :( )

Hey Randall,

not very sure about the color but I think I used GW Kommando Khaki with a Gryphonne Sepia wash.

Hello

Here's how I painted my Japs.

Your choice of colour is good  , but it seems a bit too "new", in my opinion (I would make it less saturated).
In those Areas, uniforms discolored fast.

Thanks, by less saturated do you mean thin the paint more? any suggestions as to how to fade the color would be much appreciated

Less saturated just means less "colored" and more on the greyish side - a duller color and, in this case, a lighter one.
I simply would add Vallejo Deck Tan, which is just this: light and greyish. Also Green Ochre (or similar) could be added.
One or two drybrushed layers with these colours added to your base color should be ok.
Anyway, the new pics you posted show a very good result

Thanks for the tip on this ww2only. I did change how I originally was going to paint the uniform color by mixing up the following:
Vallejo Japanese uniform
Vallejo yellow green
a touch of Vallejo black
and Reaper's Olive shadow
the first two were mixed at 50/50 and added 3 drops of black and 12 drops of the olive shadow
mixed well (added a bit of water)
Now thanks to your suggestion I will add a little dry brush with the deck tan afterwards.
The updated pics I just posted are still the original way I started to paint it. I will post this latest method soon. I am very pleased with it :-D

...and now for a bunch of visual references; some are better than others: the first link in the list depicts a real uniform, in a great state of conservation (but it's a colonel, and you must consider that a soldier's uniform was made of poorer fabric and more subject to wear and tear).
I hope these pics help understanding that colours should be fairly neutral

Thanks ww2only, that is helping me out on the equipment and what I want it to look like. seems to vary a bit depending on theater deployment.
