WW2 Soviet greatcoats

Posted by Ochoin on 08 Apr 2010, 06:12

I've just bought a box of these:

Great figures & they will be used to re-enforce existing armies so for most of the figures, colours are no problems.

Except for the Russian officer.
Is the greatcoat the same colour as an OR's?

Thanks for the advice in advance.

First: I'm no expert on uniforms. Anyhow, I am pretty sure that these great coats weren't much of a different color than the general infantry ones.
Still, I found some pictures of dark grey great coats, as the parade uniform sported them. These almost look black, and you might dare to field an officer wearing it for whatever reason (- political commissar ?). Alpine units had (almost ?) black coats, too.

Uniforms changed their color immensely, as you can easily see on the German ones: The "field grey" was in fact a dark green - at least for a couple of weeks 'til it was bleached by sun and washing.
I doubt it was different on Soviet uniforms.

Here are some examples of different suits, even an officer's one. They pretty much look the same, and though hard to say due to b&w photos elsewhere, I think it was the same color, just a better and thicker material.

I saw pictures of realistic re-enactment, showing no difference, too.

I hope I did help you ?

Gruss,
Marc.

Thank you, Mark. You have helped.

As a die-hard Napoleonics collector, I remember endless discussions over the correct shade of French dragoon green. And then I discovered dye fades, clothes get sunbleached, cottage industry manufacturing is never uniform, contemporary paintings often got it wrong etc.

So, why I don't think you can paint French Dragoon coats purple, it's not quite as rigid as I once thought.

Well I wouldn't paint the Officers coat purple but depending on what rank you want to give your officer the nicer the overcoat was (NKVD officers wore leather coats mostly of either brown or black at least that's the way I have seen them most depicted). in affect what I am saying is if you can paint the overcoat to look rougher the lower the officer rank is that would look great!
