Napoleonics trumpeters on white horses?

Posted by braxat2000 on 28 Jun 2010, 14:34

Hi,
I am planning my horses painting, and looking at various box arts of napoleonic figures I notices that the trumpeter ride white horses on them.
Was that some sort of a convention? or just artistic license?
Thanks,
Eyal.

I don't when or who it started but signal men rode different colored horses (light if if the troops had dark horses) the same as that the tunic where different makes then easier to see for the troops of course makes them also easier to see for the enemy so I'm not sure if it was really done in battle.

Yes this is especially true of the French cavalry regiments.

Grumbler is correct, I took it like this, if the object is to do your Regiment in full dress than try to follow the particular countries regulations for that type of branch of service (infantry, artillery, and cavalry) If you want to represent it as on campaign then a little more leeway is in order (as replacements were sometimes difficult to obtain). I hope this gives you some ideas to ponder about Napoleonics. :-D
